“We reiterate our commitment to continue deepening the bonds of Caribbean brotherhood, mutual respect and solidarity that unite us,” the Nicaraguan authorities said.

The President of Nicaragua, Commander Daniel Ortega Saavedra, together with Vice President Rosario Murillo, sent a message of congratulations to Her Excellency Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister-elect of Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.

The congratulations follow the victory of her party, the United National Congress (UNC), in the April 28 general elections.

In the letter, the Nicaraguan authorities emphasized: “On behalf of the People and the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of the Republic of Nicaragua, we convey our most sincere congratulations on this electoral triumph. We reiterate our commitment to continue deepening the bonds of Caribbean brotherhood, mutual respect and solidarity that unite us”.

Likewise, they expressed their willingness to work together with the new government of Trinidad and Tobago to strengthen the relations of “friendship and cooperation between our nations, in favor of peace, welfare, development and prosperity of our peoples”.

The message concluded with a “fraternal embrace from Nicaragua, Blessed, Forever Free”, along with wishes for success, health and the affection of the Nicaraguan people.

Persad-Bissesar, 73, was Prime Minister between 2010 and 2015. Her victory marks a remarkable comeback as she remains the only woman to have led the Caribbean country.
